Plot summary
Dan Evans, a Civil War veteran scraping by on a drought-plagued Arizona ranch in 1884, owes money to the Bisbee banker Glen Hollander, whose men set fire to his barn and drive off his cattle. Out searching for the herd with his sons, Evans watches the outlaw Ben Wade and his gang rob a stagecoach; Wade leaves the family unharmed but takes their horses. Evans brings the surviving coach guard, the Pinkerton agent Byron McElroy, into town, then sees Wade emerge from a Bisbee saloon before lawmen surround and arrest him. The railroad's Grayson Butterfield assembles a posse, among them McElroy, the veterinarian Doc Potter and Hollander's man Tucker, to put Wade on the 3:10 train to Yuma Territorial Prison. Evans offers to help for $200 to clear his debt.
