Plot summary
Washington, D.C., in the fall of 1963. Adam Stafford, thirteen, attends Catholic school and lives with his conservative parents. When Catherine Caswell moves in across the street, he becomes obsessed with the artist and divorcée, watching the men who come to see her and going through her mail and diary. His parents warn Adam about her reputation. She gives him work tending her garden, and the two grow close. CIA agents take notice of the boy, and operative Lucian Carver keeps watch on her. Catherine is divorced from Graham Caswell, a CIA man, and Washington gossip holds that President Kennedy is among her lovers.
