Plot summary
Ruth Sherwood reports for the Columbus Courier in Ohio. A premature and mistaken review of a stage performance by her sister Eileen runs in the paper, and Ruth is dismissed. Their grandmother encourages the sisters to move to New York City, and their father gives them the little money they have. In Greenwich Village they live in a basement apartment, where construction work, loud neighbors and visits from the police greet them. Ruth looks for work as a writer while Eileen seeks a place in the theater, and magazine editor Robert Baker takes an interest in helping both.
