Plot summary
An armored payroll truck belonging to Darcy's Security Services is robbed, and its driver, the ex-policeman Dick Martin, is moved off armored cars onto night patrols. Lionel Darcy, the head of the firm, fears that a much bigger robbery is coming, but he does not know that the men planning it all work for his company. Eric Jackson, once a speedway driver and now a senior supervisor at Darcy's, is putting together a raid on the company counting house with his brother Brian, an armored truck driver, and Ed Gallagher, who runs the counting house. The crime boss Jack Henderson finds out about the plan and wants Eric to work for him. Darcy asks Mindel Seagers, a former employee, to look into Leo Bassett, a recent arrival at the firm.

- Money Movers was based on Devon Minchin's 1972 novel; Minchin founded Metropolitan Security Services. Its plot also draws loosely on two real 1970 robberies: A$500,000 taken from a Mayne Nickless armored van, and A$280,000 stolen from Minchin's own company offices by bandits posing as policemen.
- Although the story is set in Sydney, Money Movers was shot mainly in the South Australian Film Corporation's studios and at Adelaide locations, notably the Rowley Park Speedway. The substitution shows on screen: vehicles switch between South Australia's black-on-white license plates and the New South Wales black-on-yellow version.
- The cash seen on screen was fake, but roughly A$1 million of it was used for scenes calling for large amounts of money, and real armed guards from Metropolitan Security Services were on hand during the shoot.
- Money Movers later gained a cult following among speedway fans in Australia, largely thanks to its footage of the much-loved Rowley Park, the track that closed just 13 months after filming was completed.
