Dolph Sweet

Dolph Sweet was an American actor who built a long career across stage, television and film, often cast as policemen. Born in New York City, he spent 12 years teaching drama at Barnard College, where he led the department, before making his Broadway debut in Rhinoceros in 1961 at age 40. His first major movie part came in The Young Doctors (1961), and he went on to appear in Finian's Rainbow (1968), Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970), The Out-of-Towners (1970), The New Centurions (1972), The Lords of Flatbush (1974), The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977), Which Way Is Up? (1977), Heaven Can Wait (1978), Go Tell the Spartans (1978) and The Wanderers (1979). On television he played Gil McGowan on Another World from 1972 to 1977 and J. Edgar Hoover in the miniseries King. His best-known part was Carl Kanisky, the police chief and father in Gimme a Break!, which he played from 1981 to 1985.
