Plot summary
George Kellerman, a sales executive in Twin Oaks, Ohio, is invited by his company to interview for a promotion in New York City, and he and his wife Gwen set out from home. Fog and heavy air traffic send their flight circling over JFK before it is rerouted to Boston, where they learn their luggage, holding George's ulcer medication and Gwen's spare cash, was left behind. They miss the train at South Station, chase it by cab, and ride an overcrowded car to New York. At Grand Central Terminal at two in the morning, subway, bus, taxi and sanitation workers are on strike. They walk eight blocks through a downpour past piled garbage to the Waldorf-Astoria, where their guaranteed reservation has been given away and no room is free anywhere in the city.
