Plot summary
Leroy Jones picks oranges until he joins a union demonstration by mistake and is taken for one of its leaders. The company lays him off, and he must leave town, with a bus ticket to Los Angeles as his only option. He leaves behind his wife Annie Mae and his father Rufus. In the city he takes a manager's job with the same company that dismissed him, which sets him apart from the men he once picked alongside. He meets Vanetta, a union organizer, and falls for her, so his weeks are split between a new romance in Los Angeles and the marriage he left behind.
