Plot summary
In 1957, Hernando Alamada, once a star of Filipino vaudeville and a former socialist cadre, completes his performing tour aboard the Mayflower cruise ship. President Ramon Magsaysay, the country's popular leader, has died suddenly in a plane crash, and Hernando knows the Philippines faces a bitter transition once more. He comes back to his poverty-stricken barrio, carrying the country's troubles and a personal turmoil of his own. He sets out on a journey with no clear aim, speaking only through his puppet, Ha. A nun, a sex worker named Dahlia and a teenage boy, Joselito, travel with him to a far-off island where gold has reportedly been found.
