Plot summary
An insurance company asks the detective Hercule Poirot to inspect a costly diamond that the millionaire Sir Horace Blatt put up for insurance. The stone is a fake, and the original was purchased in New York for Blatt's former mistress, the actress Arlena Marshall. Poirot travels to an exclusive hotel on an Adriatic island, once the summer palace of the King of Tyrania, to meet her. Arlena is staying there with her new husband, Kenneth, and her stepdaughter, Linda, and she flirts openly with another guest, Patrick Redfern, in front of his wife, Christine. Producers Odell and Myra Gardener and the writer Rex Brewster also have grievances against her. Then Arlena is found strangled at Ladder Bay, and every guest has an alibi.

- EMI executive Nat Cohen blamed the film's weaker box office on having only Peter Ustinov as a top-tier star while the rest of the cast were seen as lower box-office draws, and on fees that had risen sharply since the previous Poirot films.
- The uninhabited islet of Sa Dragonera off Mallorca, now protected natural-park land, was used for the film's aerial shots, and the hotel exterior at Cala d'en Monjo was later demolished when its land became a nature reserve.
- Actress Sylvia Miles based her performance as producer Myra Gardener on real Broadway producer Terry Allen Kramer, even though the two had never met.
- The adaptation was held up in part by the 1976 death of screenwriter Paul Dehn, who had adapted Orient Express for the screen and was to adapt Evil Under the Sun as well.
- The novel was set in Devon, but the film moved the story to an Adriatic island in the fictional kingdom of Tyrania, which was based on Albania.
