Plot summary
Heidi, called Adelheid, loses her parents while still small. Her aunt Detie takes her up into the Alps to the isolated home of her grandfather, Alp, who lives apart from the village. Heidi settles into the mountain life and follows Peter, the goatherd, as he takes the goats out to pasture. Her grandfather keeps her from attending school in the city, and when Detie comes back for her, she overrules him. Heidi is taken to Frankfurt to live with the wealthy Sesemann family, where she is to be a companion to Clara, the household's invalid daughter, outside school hours. The housekeeper, Rottenmeier, a strict woman, sees the disruption Heidi causes as bad behavior and imposes tighter and tighter limits on her.
