Plot summary
Eddie Farrell and Lou Pesquino are small-time con men on the run from a loan shark. A scheme posing as repairmen sent to fix a gas leak fails and they slip away into an empty house, where a message on the answering machine says the owner will be abroad for a month or two and the person lined up to watch the place cannot come. The two spend the night. The next day thugs working for the gangster Sal Nichols chase them over a briefcase holding sixty thousand dollars they did not take. Separated from Lou, Eddie takes refuge back at the house, and in the morning Mona Malkin, whose son owns it, mistakes him for the house-sitter. He plays along and meets her husband Milt, who offers him a job.
