Avery Brooks
Biography
Avery Brooks is an American actor, director, singer and educator. He is best known for playing Hawk on Spenser: For Hire and Benjamin Sisko on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Born in Evansville, Indiana, he gained notice in theater with Spell #7 in 1979 and later portrayed Paul Robeson in a one-man drama. He directed episodes of Deep Space Nine, among them Far Beyond the Stars. His screen credits include Finnegan Begin Again (1985), American History X (1998), The Big Hit (1998) and 15 Minutes (2001). His honors include a Saturn Award nomination and three NAACP Image Award nominations, and he became a member of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. Brooks has also narrated documentaries, released the album Here and appeared in The Captains (2011).

A first
Brooks earned a Bachelor of Arts and then a Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University in 1976. At Rutgers, he was the first African American to be awarded an MFA in acting and directing.
Big break
In 1985, Brooks was cast as Hawk on the ABC detective show Spenser: For Hire. The character grew popular, and after three seasons he got his own short-lived spinoff, A Man Called Hawk, in 1989.
A first
Brooks gave voice to Alex Haley's novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family as an audiobook, the book's first audio adaptation. In 2008 it earned an Audie Award in the Non-Fiction category.
