Plot summary
Four women have been knifed on the evening streets of Paris, and the killer taunts the police for failing to catch him. Though their garments were torn, each was found to have remained virtuous. The inquiry is handed to Inspector Jules Maigret. Inspector Lagrume believes the culprit is Barberot, a local butcher, but Maigret is not convinced and judges that the murderer is still at large. To unmask him, Maigret must set a trap.
