Plot summary
Barbara is an Irish Catholic mother in New York whose son Jimmy, a college freshman, is hazed by his fraternity and ends up in a coma after being forced to drink. The family takes him off life support, and the college sends a letter refusing liability. Barbara spends her days at home chain-smoking and writing angry emails to the college principal, distancing herself from her three other children. Reading online accounts by mothers whose sons died after hazing, she decides to travel the country interviewing them, hoping to draw attention to the practice and to get help from Bob Daley, a senator and a friend of her husband Jim.
