Plot summary
Michael Andropolis is an American marathon runner and a hopeful for the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics. His marriage to Janet, with whom he has two children, has fallen apart and she wants a divorce. He is unemployed, and he loses his temper at the bureaucracy of the unemployment office. Coach Walker is reluctant to endorse him for the games. Andropolis always starts races strongly, but he pulls ahead of the pack too soon, using up the stamina the final minutes of a race demand, so he seldom comes in first.
