Plot summary
Maggie Carpenter has left three grooms at the altar, and her Maryland town has taken to calling her the runaway bride. Ike Graham, a New York columnist, turns her story into a column after hearing it in a bar from a man he does not know is one of her former fiancés. The piece is full of errors, and Maggie sends the newspaper a furious rebuttal. Ike loses his job, but his boss offers him another chance: a truthful, in-depth article about Maggie. He travels to Hale, where she works in her family's hardware store and builds designer lamps out of salvaged machinery. Her fourth groom, high school football coach Bob Kelly, is helping her picture the ceremony. Ike follows her around town and questions her friends, family and former fiancés, while the town makes fun of her.
