Plot summary
Mia is turning seven, and at the house she shares with her mother Sarah a rabbit appears and Mia grows attached to it. Mia's father Peter arrives that evening with his partner Denise and her son Toby. Toby strikes Mia on the head while they play, and Mia cries out; Sarah scolds the boy and Denise, who defuses the moment by offering Mia cake. Later that night Sarah tries to get rid of the rabbit over the garden wall, and it bites her hand. From the next morning Mia goes silent for stretches and wears a rabbit mask she made, refusing to take it off. At school she hides inside a playground tube but says no one is bullying her. She talks about her grandmother Joan, a woman Sarah no longer speaks to and whom Mia has never met.

- Elisabeth Moss was attached to star in Run Rabbit Run in June 2020, having previously worked with director Daina Reid on The Handmaid's Tale, but had to pull out over scheduling issues. Sarah Snook was announced in her place in December 2021.
- Writer Hannah Kent first imagined the story as a novel based on a true case of a Scottish child who remembered a past life, and suggested that storyline when producers Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw asked her for a screenplay idea.
