Plot summary
Anna, 17, has been chatting online with a boy named Eric, and they discuss Emily Dickinson. Her friend Brit learns that he is older. Anna's mother Beth has just gotten engaged to Tim, a police officer. On Anna's birthday, Eric video calls her and appears to be standing outside the house; when she opens the door, he gives her a book of poems. During a walk in the park, he admits he is 28 and says he lied because he was nervous. Anna hides him in her room so Beth and Tim will not see him, but he slips away while Beth showers. He apologizes by phone from a truck stop, and the two text constantly. Anna tells Beth and Tim she has a boyfriend in his mid-20s, and Beth grows concerned when she learns they are sleeping together.
