Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Romeo's Distress (2016)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Romeo's Distress was shot over 23 days spread across 15 months on a budget of $2,553, with only one or two shooting days a month even though the story takes place over just three days.
  • When production lost one actor, the entire ending was rewritten on the spot around a brand new character, with new scenes and inserts shot and woven in; almost half the film was rewritten in the assembly edit.
  • The director Jeff Frumess cast his own grandmother as Grandma, but her body is played by Dave Street, who also plays Uncle Elmo; her face and her body were shot more than a year apart.
  • The film's cemetery is made up of four real cemeteries plus one fabricated in the director's parents' backyard, among them the Old Dutch cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, and Nick Bohun and Jeff Frumess were each kicked out by the groundskeeper during shooting.
  • The electrocution scene was modeled on Beef's on-stage death in Phantom of the Paradise, one of the director's favorite films, with each frame reorganized to create a disjointed, jarring effect.
  • Dale's insurance office, the flower shop and Dr Woodbine's psychiatrist office interiors were all filmed in exactly the same room, set dressed over and over as needed for the production.
  • The film was shot with the in-camera Monochrome profile on the Canon 70D DSLR, a choice made in part because first-time cinematographer Jeff Frumess found it easier to light for black and white than for color.
