Plot summary
Ella Richards sews for a living in Brooklyn and designs plus-size fashion, a market the high-end industry ignores and one she has felt shut out of all her life. Her friend Max sends sewing work her way, and her roommate Katie is an assistant at the magazine Look, where editor-in-chief Claudia Davenport and Katie's boss Liza run the office. On the day Ella helps Katie with a shoot, Derek Colby arrives, sent by Colby Publishing, his father Roger's company, to address the magazine's falling advertising and subscription revenue. Derek turns to Ella to learn the basics of fashion design, drawn to her knowledge of the field and to the fact that she is not intimidated by him. He sees a plus-size readership the magazine could reach. Claudia and Liza object to that direction.
