Plot summary
Commissions for major sculptures, among them Monument to Balzac, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais and The Gates of Hell, keep Auguste Rodin's studio busy with students and models. His marriage has grown colder over the years, and he begins a relationship with Camille Claudel, a younger sculptor who becomes his assistant and whom he regards as an equal in matters of creation. For a life-size sculpture of Honoré Balzac he imagines the writer in a heroic nude stance, and with no live model for Balzac he has a pregnant woman pose nude in that posture, her added mass standing in for the writer's bulk in older age.
