Plot summary
His family's ranch is unoccupied but still functional, and Nathan tells Professor Nash that it stands on an ancient Indian burial ground. Nathan studies anthropology and resents that his society offers no ceremony to mark a boy's passage into manhood. Nash, who pursues sexual relationships with the women he teaches, agrees to bring the class to the ranch for a spiritual ceremony in a sweat lodge raised on the burial site. Nathan leads his classmates, among them Dani, to the ranch, where they meet his brother Benny, lost in drug addiction and guilt, and Delgado, a crystal meth cook with a grudge.
