Plot summary
After his father's death, Alex is sent to a summer camp in southern California, and he keeps to himself until he meets two other campers who do not fit in: Zhen Zhen, a girl from China who does not speak, and the wealthy and outspoken Dariush. One afternoon Alex, Zhen Zhen, Dariush and Gabriel, a boy from outside the camp, are together at a cliff when their phones order them to evacuate. They hurry back to find the camp bus gone and alien ships descending on the valley. The camp is empty except for the counselor Conrad, and a Dragon spacecraft from the International Space Station lands nearby. The astronaut inside gives Alex a key and tells him to carry it to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which offers the means to destroy the aliens.
