Plot summary
The two-year-old boy found in the dinghy between Richard and Emmeline Lestrange knows only one word, Richard, so the crew gives him that name and hands him to Sarah Hargrave, a widow aboard with her infant daughter Lilli. When cholera spreads through the crew, Sarah, Lilli and the boy are put off the ship in a lifeboat with a sailor, Kearney. Kearney threatens the crying child, and Sarah takes the boat and guides it to a tropical island, where she raises the two children herself, schooling them from the Bible and her own knowledge and warning them away from the island's forbidden side.
