Plot summary
Julia, who is 25, leaves London in 1972 with her two daughters and settles in Marrakesh. Lucy is six and Bea is eight. The family stays in a low-rent hotel and lives on dolls Julia sews and money sent by the girls' father, a poet in London who has another child. The girls bring Bilal, a Moroccan acrobat, into their mother's life, and he moves into their room and takes the place of a father. Julia's friend Eva urges her to study with a Sufi master in Algiers, and the European dandy Santoni invites the family to his villa. When money runs out, Bilal says that God will provide.
