Plot summary
A suicide attack in North Africa kills an agent and 18 civilians, while the intended target, police official Abasi Fawal, escapes harm. In Chicago, Egyptian-born chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi lives with his pregnant wife Isabella, their son and his mother. Phone records linking him to a known terrorist put him under suspicion, and on his return from a conference in South Africa he is detained and flown to a secret facility near the attack site, where Fawal interrogates him. Isabella is told nothing, and evidence of his presence on the flight is erased. In Washington she asks Alan Smith, an aide to Senator Hawkins, to help find her husband. CIA analyst Douglas Freeman, assigned to observe the interrogation, doubts Anwar's guilt, while his superior Corrine Whitman defends the practice.
