Plot summary
Zev Guttman, an Auschwitz survivor of 89 with dementia, lives in a New York City nursing home. His wife Ruth died two weeks ago. Max Rosenbaum, a fellow survivor in the home, is incapacitated. The Blockführer Otto Wallisch murdered both their families at the camp, and he is thought to have entered the United States under the name Rudy Kurlander. The Simon Wiesenthal Center has traced four men with that name, but none can be arrested for lack of evidence. Max says that only the two of them can recognize Wallisch, and gives Zev written instructions to follow.

Atom Egoyan intended to use a stunt double for Christopher Plummer in the scene where Zev kills John Kurlander, but Plummer demanded he perform it himself, saying it made him feel "suddenly rather old". Plummer admitted firing the gun "frightened" him because the weapons "pack the kick of an elephant", and that he was "terrified" of the dog in the scene.
