Herbert Berghof
Biography
Herbert Berghof was an American actor and director who also taught acting, training in Vienna with Max Reinhardt before moving to New York in 1939 to build a career on Broadway. He co-founded HB Studio in New York City in 1945 so that aspiring actors could train and practice there, and ran it with his artistic partner Uta Hagen. A charter member of the Actors Studio from 1947, he appeared on stage in plays including The Lady from the Sea and The Andersonville Trial, and he staged Waiting for Godot on Broadway in 1956, its first production there. His films included Red Planet Mars (1952), 5 Fingers (1952), Harry and Tonto (1974), Those Lips, Those Eyes (1980), Times Square (1980) and Target (1985). He died in 1990.

Behind the camera
In 1945, Berghof helped start HB Studio in New York City, where actors hoping to learn their craft could study and rehearse.
Early training
In 1947, Berghof joined the Actors Studio as one of its charter members. Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Jerome Robbins, and Sidney Lumet were among his classmates there.
Early training
Berghof was a charter member of the Actors Studio, but he disagreed with colleagues who taught the Method technique, since his own approach came to stress actions over thoughts and reactions.
