Plot summary

Dirk Hendricks, a police officer, applies for amnesty for the torture he carried out during apartheid. The case brings Sarah Barcant back from New York to the country where she grew up: she is to represent Alex Mpondo, now a member of Parliament, who was tortured as a captive political activist and cannot recall what was done to him. Steve Sizela, arrested alongside Mpondo, was never heard from again, and his parents ask Barcant to speak for them too. Ben Hoffman, a white lawyer who spent his life opposing apartheid and once got Barcant out of custody, is now too weak to handle the case himself, and she has come because she owes him a debt.
