Plot summary
Griffith has spent all his life in Pine Apple, Mississippi, a town he knows by its red dirt and its gravestones. His parents drowned when their car went off into the river. His aunt Summer and uncle Charlie brought him up. Summer is mentally ill and rarely leaves the house. Cancer took Charlie when Griffith was fourteen, and after that Griffith and Lily Mae, the family matriarch, looked after her. Griffith, now twenty, is close to Emily, his cousin. Since Lily Mae died, he is the one who cares for Summer, and he wants to leave.
