Plot summary
Roland Gumpert leads the Audi Sport team into the 1983 World Rally Championship with the four-wheel-drive Quattro, the car favored to win. Cesare Fiorio runs Lancia Abarth and its two-wheel-drive Rally 037. Only 103 of the Lancia models have been built, short of the 200 the rules require, so Fiorio subverts the count by presenting the same vehicles twice at two different locations, treating the two inspectors to lunch while the cars are moved. Lancia hires the German rally driver Walter Röhrl for one half of the season's races, among them Monte Carlo, Portugal, Greece and San Remo. Ennio is a mechanic for Lancia.
