Plot summary
During a drug bust in Boston, detectives Nick Walker and Bobby Hayes pocket a stash of gold. Nick regrets it and tells his partner he will hand the evidence in. Hayes shoots him on their next raid. Nick is drawn into a vortex and wakes in an office, where Mildred Proctor explains that he is dead and recruits him into the Rest in Peace Department, an agency that hunts Deados, souls who escaped judgment. Nick is paired with Roy Pulsipher, a lawman from the Old West. The universe has changed every officer's appearance, so at his own funeral Nick wears the face of an elderly Asian man while Roy looks like a blonde woman, and his widow Julia does not recognize him.

- According to Deadline.com, the budget was more than the $130 million the studio claimed, and was $154 million even after $28.1 million in tax rebates.
- Jeff Bridges entered talks to star as the co-lead in the film only after Zach Galifianakis turned the role down.
- R.I.P.D. grossed only $12.7 million in its opening weekend and ended its theatrical run with $78.3 million worldwide, including a $33.6 million domestic total and $44.7 million in other territories.
- Kevin Bacon was cast as the villain in July, with Stephanie Szostak and Mary-Louise Parker rounding out the cast in August, Parker taking the role of Proctor, for which Jodie Foster had been considered.
