Plot summary
Helen has no wish to leave her own house, but a fire from her cooking ruins the kitchen and getting it fixed will take at least a month, so her daughter Laura talks her into a temporary stay at Pine Grove. The social life there is run by a group of women known as the Queen Bees, led by Janet, alongside a few unattached men such as Arthur, and Helen does not fit in at first. Laura, a real estate agent, has her own interest in the place and presses its manager, Ken, to help her mother settle in. Sally offers Helen a place at bridge, and Helen begins to feel more at home, though she keeps her distance from Dan, a new resident, out of loyalty to her late husband.
