Plot summary
At the New York TRACON, Nick "The Zone" Falzone and his fellow controllers handle an airspace that drives half the new hires to quit, and they take pride in the pressure. A transfer joins the facility: Russell Bell, who has worked radar facilities in the western United States, quiet and confident, and who moves the traffic with risky, unorthodox methods. Nick feels challenged by a colleague who beats him at one task after another, and after learning that Russell once stood on a runway so a landing airliner's wake turbulence would throw him, he tells his supervisor the newcomer is a loose cannon.
