Plot summary
Stan fought as a professional boxer, and his son Jim took up the sport as well. Jim is seventeen and a boxing hero in the small town where they live, carrying the hopes his father has placed on him. He discovers that he is homosexual and begins a relationship with Whetu, a takatāpui Māori teenager his own age who is working toward a life as a singer. Almost everyone in the town looks on the two of them negatively, the town's men in particular. The future his father wants for him is a boxing one, and Jim has to decide what his own future will be.
