Plot summary
High school senior David Raskin wins admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but his family cannot cover the tuition, and his mother Kathy faces selling their house. Hoping to find something worth a scholarship, David and his sister Christina, along with friends Adam Le and Quinn Goldberg, film themselves going through the possessions of his father, the inventor Ben Raskin, who died when David turned seven. An old camera holds footage of that party in which David, at his present age, appears in a reflection. The group follows the clue to the basement Ben had kept off limits, throws a switch, and uncovers blueprints for a time travel device designed for a government project called Project Almanac. The friends build the machine, send a toy car into the past, and black out their neighborhood.

- Shortly before release it emerged that the footage turned in to Paramount contained two seconds of a real-life plane crash; two families of victims of the 1994 Fairchild Air Force Base crash said it was that footage. Producer Michael Bay apologized publicly, saying he had thought it was a special effect shot and asked Paramount to remove it.
- Paramount fast tracked the film hoping it would match the success of Chronicle, and also to finish it before a competing found footage time travel film at DreamWorks titled Glimmer.
