Plot summary

Taketori-no-Miyatsuko and his wife Tayoshime are poor farmers who have lost their only child. In the forest, Taketori-no-Miyatsuko sees an electric storm and finds a blue cocoon on burnt ground. It opens to a baby girl with blue eyes. He brings her home, and Tayoshime says the child is their dead daughter Kaya and gives her that name. The new Kaya grows faster than a human. A diamond in her keeping sometimes shines and speaks. She becomes a great beauty and stays hidden at home, while her parents' harvests prosper. Three ministers, Otomo-no-Dainagon, Kuramochi-no-Miko and Abe-no-Udaijin, fall in love with her and insist on marriage. Her parents let her choose, but she cannot, so she asks each man to bring her a legendary object.
