Plot summary
Kimihiro Watanuki, a schoolboy who can see ayakashi, is plagued by the spirits. He comes across a wish-granting shop kept by Yuko Ichihara, a witch with many names and esoteric renown. Yuko helps people who are in a bind, for a fee, and one of her clients, Misaki, is possessed by an ayakashi. She offers to take the spirits from Watanuki, and in return he becomes her part-time cook and housekeeper, working in a shop where two artificial beings, Maru and Moro, live. At school he grows close to two classmates: Shizuka Dōmeki, who lives at a shrine, and Himawari Kunogi. A large mysterious incident draws him in.

- Director Mika Ninagawa had the idea for a live-action xxxHolic in 2012 while she was still shooting her film Helter Skelter, then called the producer out of the blue on January 4, 2013 to say she wanted to make it.
- Shooting was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which became a turning point in deciding how the film's climax would work and made tolerance a theme explored in the movie.
- Choosing which of the manga's 19 volumes to adapt took so long to satisfy everyone that two other films came out first, making xxxHolic Mika Ninagawa's fifth film rather than her third.
