Plot summary
The Satomi family falls under a curse, and the Hikita clan comes back from death to collect on it, hunting Princess Shizu because her skin can restore the face of its warlord. The clan kills her family; Shizu gets away. On the road the vagabond Shinbei comes upon her, and Dosetsu drives off the men chasing her. Dosetsu explains that eight beads mark eight dog-warriors able to break the curse, and that he and Shinbei are two of them. The rest must be gathered before she can face Tamazusa, the queen whose clan killed her family, who keeps her youth by bathing in blood and lives in a castle with her son among monsters, goblins and apparitions.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film keeps little of Bakin's original beyond the beads and some back story, rebuilding the story as a band of warriors gathered for a task, as in Kurosawa's Seven Samurai; the eight dog brothers change substantially, down to Keno's feminine disguise becoming actual womanhood.
- The film's fantastical elements came from a mix of props, wire work and post-production effects, made by the Tokusatsu Laboratory team led by Nobuo Yajima, who had previously worked on another Hakkenden adaptation, Message From Space.
