Plot summary
An agent of the Temporal Bureau travels through time to stop killers before they strike, and his final assignment is the Fizzle Bomber, a terrorist blamed for bombings across many decades. Burned while trying to disarm a bomb, he escapes to headquarters in 1992, where surgeons will change his face and voice and he is told a long career can leave an agent unstable. He returns to New York City in 1970 and takes a job tending bar. There he meets John, a columnist whose pen name is The Unmarried Mother and who, asked how he writes his confession stories so convincingly, begins to tell his own.

- The Spierig brothers, who wrote and directed Predestination, deliberately refused to pick apart the logic of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 short story, reasoning that if it could be done it would have been done in the 50-plus years since publication.
