Pray for Rain (2017) on Netflix

Plot summary

Emma Gardner works as a reporter in New York City. Word reaches her that her father has died, and she travels to the California farming area where she spent her childhood. The town is no longer the idyllic place she remembers. Drought has dried the land, extreme poverty has taken hold, and gangs hold sway. Her father was a farmer with a strong reputation in the community, and his death was recorded as an accident. Emma doubts that and begins looking into how he died. Among those who might be responsible are environmental activists, a local war lord, and farmers who envied her father's standing.
