Plot summary
Philbert Bono, a large man guided by sacred visions, hunts for his medicine and for tokens from the spirits. A car commercial about finding your own pony sends him to a junkyard, where he trades marijuana for a battered 1964 Buick Wildcat he calls Protector. At Lame Deer, Montana, his childhood acquaintance Buddy Red Bow is pressing the Northern Cheyenne council to reject a strip-mining contract. Buddy learns that his sister Bonnie is jailed in Santa Fe after drugs were planted in her car trunk. Buddy has no car, so he persuades Philbert to drive him south.
