Plot summary
George Barber is a mathematician who dreams of men shifting stones along a rocky waterfront, and of a Guide among them. He keeps meeting Joyce at a bar, where she appears as a scientist, as a stockbroker, as someone new each time, and she never remembers him. Inspector Berkley and Detective Williams ask a neuroscientist about a series of break-ins in which the victims' brains have been taken. His dreams trouble him enough that he consults a doctor. His meetings with Joyce go well in some lives and badly in others, and he grows aware of what he carries from one life into the next.
