Plot summary
By 2029, Los Angeles answers rising violent crime with the Mercy Capital Court, where artificial intelligence judges try defendants and devices feed a municipal cloud. Defendants receive ninety minutes and all available resources to prove innocence; failure means execution by sonic blast. Detective Chris Raven, a court supporter, is strapped into a chair and tried for the murder of his wife, Nicole. Judge Maddox presides. Nicole's blood on his clothing and doorbell footage placing him home shortly before the killing leave his guilt probability at 97.5 percent. The figure must drop to 92 percent for reasonable doubt or 80 percent for a Mercy Trial. A separate timer runs the chair, since an AI cannot take a human life. His partner, Jacqueline 'Jaq' Diallo, gathers evidence.
