Plot summary
Inside a new supercomputer at the Institute for Cybernetics and Futurology runs a simulation that gives a home to more than 9,000 identity units, each of them living as a human being and not knowing that its world is not the real one. Henry Vollmer, who directs the program, grows agitated and soon dies. Fred Stiller is his successor. Günther Lause, who handles security for the institute, vanishes during a talk with Stiller, and the other employees do not remember him.
