Plot summary
Ren Amari leads the research at a technology company she started with Sam. Using nanotechnology she creates OtherLife, a biological virtual reality that plants realistic memories in the mind, and days before the launch she tests its code on herself while the engineer Byron Finbar watches. Without telling anyone, she also uses it on Jared, her brother, who lies in a coma, hoping the inserted memories will bring him back; her father, a professor whose research the drug rests on, would rather end Jared's life support. Sam takes the product to investors with a plan to sell it to the government as a substitute for prison, where an inmate would live years inside his own head in a single outside minute. Ren is horrified, and her relationship with her coworker Danny is already strained.
