Polite Society (2023) on Netflix

Plot summary

In London, British-Pakistani teenager Ria Khan makes martial arts training films with her older sister Lena, using the alter ego the Fury, and wants to work as a stunt performer like her idol Eunice Huthart. Her parents, Fatima and Rafe, discourage her dreams, and her emails to Eunice go unanswered. At school she has Clara and Alba, a bully named Kovacs, and a teacher who urges a more serious career. When the family attends an Eid soirée at the mansion of Raheela, who leads Fatima's social circle, Ria works out that the party is meant to find a match for Raheela's son Salim, a geneticist. She cannot stop Lena from agreeing to a date, and after a few weeks Lena accepts Salim's proposal and a move to Singapore, giving up her art.
