- The real Playland Café at 21 Essex Street in Boston, Massachusetts, was the city's oldest gay bar, standing in the Combat Zone, the adult-entertainment district now called Downtown Crossing. It opened in 1937 and quickly acquired its reputation as a gay bar.
- After World War II the US military, worried soldiers would visit gay bars, banned them; Joan Ilacqua of The History Project, who worked with director Georden West, researched a list of all Boston bars hit by the ban, and the Playland Café was one of them.
