Plot summary
From Lunar Station 7, three Soviet spaceships set out for the first human landing on Venus: Sirius, Vega and Capella. A meteor destroys Capella and everyone aboard, so the two surviving ships decide to go on rather than wait two months for a replacement from Earth. Ivan and Allan, with the robot John partly taken apart for the journey, descend in Vega's glider, and Masha stays in orbit to monitor communications. Sirius, carrying Ilya, Roman and Alyosha, lands elsewhere, in volcanic terrain. The atmosphere is poisonous, so the men leave the ship in spacesuits and helmets. Venus has life: a plant seizes Alyosha before Ilya and Roman pull him free, and the men photograph it.

- The portrayal of the female cosmonaut Masha as emotional and arguably mentally unstable was criticized by the Soviet government and press as misogynist, and damaged director Pavel Klushantsev's career.
- In 1968 Peter Bogdanovich, using the name Derek Thomas, was hired by Roger Corman to make a second American version, Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women, adding scenes with Mamie Van Doren and other women as Venusians wearing sea-shell brassieres.
