Plot summary
A powerful radiation phenomenon appears at the edge of the Solar System and moves toward Earth. It is called the Orion Loop. The radiation can drive astronauts insane, so a Soviet ship, the Phaeton, is sent on a United Nations mission to intercept it. The crew mixes people with identical androids known as cybers, built to withstand extreme conditions. Commander Pavel Belov leads navigator August Goris, engineer Mitya Tamarkin, cybernetic Alexander Sagansky and doctor Maria Dementieva. The doubles are meant to keep the human crew from being distracted. As the Phaeton approaches the loop, strange events begin to trouble the mission.
